Hi I am currently driving 2013 manual diesel tekna for last 3 years with no major problems and very impressed however, I now need to get an automatic due to left knee problems and would welcome any advice and experience regarding the X-tronic fitted on the petrol and diesel which is best? or Is Xtronic cvt as bad as some say? Current annual mileage is about 4-5,000 with very little motorway driving.

5 actually Tiff .
Lovin’it. First three were CVT and last two were Xtronic.
TBH I think I prefer the CVT but hey ho, they’re all fab and no problems (touch wood).
Mine needed a few days in the body shop for a new rear bumper - we all stopped in a queue and a Ford Transit didn’t...... .
Reason I mentioned it was that my courtesy car was a top of the range A series Merc AMG auto. Smart but tech was not up to Tekna standards and so pleased to get my baby back.

Aren't CVT and Xtronic one and the same thing - only with a different name?

Quote from Nissan “The Difference Between a Conventional CVT and Nissan's Xtronic CVT

The biggest difference between a conventional CVT and Nissan's Xtronic CVT is the increase in distance between the transmission oil and the pulley. This decreases the amount of friction that builds up, and it also helps to smooth out the ride. The Xtronic CVT is one of the first to have a sub-planetary gear that makes it smaller and reduces the weight.”

And from a driver’s viewpoint - the original CVT had the ability to ‘brake’ the car when you took your foot off the gas, say when going downhill. The Xtronic (in response to customer feedback apparently) - not mine - behaves more like a conventional auto, running away with you downhill. I was invited to Paris in 2014 (thank you very much) along with Wifey, as guests of Nissan and the gearbox manufactures to drive and film and comment on the Xtronic. Mine was only a day old so not really tried it yet. Therefore I was singing the praises of the CVT ‘braking’ characteristics not knowing the Xtronic had none 🤡 d’oh.
